Het LUNA String Quartet, strijkkwartet voor hedendaagse muziek streeft sinds 2018 naar het allernieuwste. LUNA zoekt bewust de rafelranden van de nieuwe en experimentele muziek op, vanuit het besef dat daar geschiedenis wordt geschreven. Zonder reserve zetten de vier strijkers hun expertise in en gaan ze ver in het verleggen van grenzen.

Intensieve internationale samenwerking vindt plaats met de Duitse performance-componisten Kunsu Shim en Gerhard Staebler en met de Britse componist Frank Denyer. In 2019 en 2020 gaf LUNA concerten met werk van het duo Shim/Staebler op festivals in Trier, Darmstadt, Goch en Essen.

In opdracht van Frank Denyer nam LUNA zijn String Quartet op voor de cd The Boundaries of Intimacy, die in 2019 uitkwam bij het Engelse kwaliteitslabel Another Timbre. Daarna volgden opnames voor Melodies van Frank Denyer, een microtonaal werk uit de jaren ’70, in samenwerking met het Scordatura Ensemble. Ook dit zal uitgebracht worden door Another Timbre, in najaar 2021. Denyer, die het LUNA String Quartet ‘sensational’ noemde, schrijft inmiddels voor hen een nieuw strijkkwartet voor zijn volgende cd.

In september 2021, op het ‘Composers Portrait Ig Henneman 75’ zal LUNA de wereldpremière verzorgen van haar nieuwe strijkkwartet Outside the rain has stopped. Ook staan samenwerkingen met componisten Rozalie Hirs en Willem Boogman, harmoniumspeler Klaas Hoek en accordeonist Vincent van Amsterdam op het programma.
